The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many changes and restrictions for everyone. However, looking at the positive side, something good has happened as families now have the opportunity to spend more time together. Being all at home allows for sharing meals, leisure time as a family, and some household responsibilities.
Children and young people need to socialize and have leisure time, but most social activities are now done through virtual means, and that is a reality we cannot change. Online games and social media provide an alternative for socializing.
In this aspect, parents must pay attention and find the right balance regarding the time and opportunity for their children to connect to the Internet. Agreements should be established so that the connection occurs after fulfilling their school and family responsibilities, setting limits, respecting bedtime hours, and designated spaces for meals without being connected to screens. But it is not only about formal aspects. It is also crucial to be aware of the content to which our children and young people are exposed.
The Internet is one of the best inventions of this time for communication and information. However, there are several dangers that we cannot ignore. One of them is related to the identity of the people interacting with our children. We are well aware that there are unscrupulous individuals and specialized mafias aiming to manipulate minors for malicious purposes. Another danger is that a significant portion of the information disseminated through this medium is not valid or suitable for minors, causing confusion, fears, or uncertainty in them.
Through online games, cable movies, series, social networks, YouTube, Netflix, etc., children and young people can be exposed to content involving violence, lifestyles, moral conflicts, and values that may not align with those of their own family.
For example, anime or manga series offer genres for all ages and tastes. The stories can be harmless, with epic themes, mythological aspects, romance, or science fiction, but there are also others that include adult content with contract killings, drugs, prostitution, romance, and heterosexual or homosexual relationships that children could view without restrictions unless parents supervise or set filters. Additionally, there are fandoms (fan groups), chats where enthusiasts share and socialize around the series and sometimes even with the authors of the stories.
The daily exposure to this type of content where everything is allowed acts subliminally distorting the ability to recognize what is healthy and convenient for personal and social well-being. On the other hand, the time parents dedicate each day to discuss fundamental topics with their children such as respect for life, human dignity, defining their sexual identity, vocational orientation, or life project is less than the hours spent on the Internet. Therefore, let’s make efforts to maintain good and fluid communication and make productive use of the time spent together as a family!
